This NEXTBUILT edition particularly calls for insightful contributions that discuss policies, trends, strategies, methodologies, design approaches and technologies to tackle future needs by overcoming business-as-usual models. How to move from home for life to flexible dwellings that allow residents to remain in place over their changing circumstances (i.e. the number of inhabitants and number of rooms vary over time)? How to deal with very slow/no growth (i.e. no new build)? How can the building stock be retrofitted to accommodate more dwellings but smaller family sizes? What monitoring, feedback regulation, enforcement and management processes are needed to ensure residents’ health, well-being, and safety over the long term?

The second NEXT BUILT Workshop took place in April 2025 and involved MSc students from Architecture-related curricula of the University of Bologna (IT). Participants have been engaged with Energon, a game to reflect on the drivers of energy savings in the residential sector for the next generation of users. Click here to check the dedicated page.

This NEXTBUILT edition aims to stimulate a reflection on resource scarcity in the next generation built environment, assuming a strongly forward-looking approach. How can we live with less? Ranging from tangible (materials, water, energy) to intangible means (finance, resources, time), the Conference seeks for contributions to discuss policies, trends, strategies, methodologies, design approaches and technologies to tackle future needs by overcoming business-as-usual models. The Conference offers the opportunity to bring together bright minds, giving idea-focused talks on four key topics and sharing lessons learned, inspirations, and pathways to shape the NEXT generation BUILT environment.

The first Next Built Workshop will take place in May, 2023 and will involve MS students from Architecture-related curricula of the University of Bologna. Participants will be engaged through a role game and asked to reflect on promising pathways to Climate Neutral Cities.

In May 2022, Next Built launched the first International Conference on the Next Generation Built Environment. The blended event registered more than 100 participants from 26 countries all over the world, dealing with 4 key topics.
